Tour Guiding 101
About Lesson

Guides, meets tourists who complain, those who are late, or those who dominate others. However, the incidence of difficult behavior is not very frequent. Poor behavior handled with compassion and reason can be converted to model behavior. It seldom happens  that guides have consistently content, well- behaved groups while others have repeated  problems about coming late, discourtesy and even “mutiny”. For all the unpleasant stories guides tell about difficult travels and difficult groups, it is the guide who is largely responsible for the ambiance of a tour. The 1st duty of a guide when he meets the group is to create an atmosphere of harmony and mutual trust. Visitors will scrutinize the guide for the sign about his/her attitude, personality, capability. If scrutiny is disheartening, guide should note the following:

  1. People travel on tours to enjoy themselves. As one tour operator said “This isn’t brain surgery. Relax and enjoy yourself, and your group will, too.”
  2. Most people would like to see the guide succeed.
  3. No one expects perfection. In fact, many perfectionist turn people off.

Keeping these concepts in mind and adopting an optimistic, proactive attitude can help guides establish rapport, develop cohesiveness among tour members, and deal with challenging situations that may occur.
