Useful Tips in Delivering a Commentary

Knowing what to say is just one part of the delivery of a tour commentary. The way you deliver it will largely determine the success of the tour. You will need.

  1. Good Appearance. Half of the bottle is won by the way you look. Always ensure that you look and smell clean. Dress appropriately for the tour. A tour guide’s attire must protect him/her from the elements like the sun’s rays. However, it must be comfortable, presentable, and compliant with the rules of the places that you will visit, such as churches and restaurants. If the guide is comfortable with what he/she is wearing, he/she will be able to serve the tourist well.
  2. Good introduction. First impressions last. Aside from looking and smelling good, always begin the tour with a smile, greetings, and self-introduction.
  3. Good Communication skills. Speak clearly and audibly. Use polite and simple words, and maintain eye contact with guests. Use appropriate body language, such as showing directions with a palm facing up instead of pointing with finger. Pepper your commentary with wholesome humor. Think of ways to entertain tourist during bad traffic situations, and know to stop talking as well. Tourist also need some time to rest and appreciate the view on their own.
  4. Good Preparation. Prepare for the tour well. Know your product; it builds your confidence.
  5. Good Behavior. The guest will look at you and follow your cues. Act as a role model. Be motivated. Try to answer question as best as you can but apologize for question that you cannot answer. Try to provide feedback and follow up when necessary.

Never memorize a spiel; it will sound unnatural. The key is familiarization and genuine interest in the tourist site. Guides need not say everything they know or prepared; the pace will dictate what needs to be said.
