Bus tour commentary refers to the narration of a tour guide delivered inside a bus or a motor coach .It is unique because the movement of the bus is not controlled by the tour guide, but by driver and the traffic flow. Here are some things to remember when giving a bus tour commentary (3Ps):
- The guide must position himself/herself well .He/she should be close enough to the driver to be able to give instructions and visible to the passengers and near the door without blocking the side of mirror so as obstruct to the view of the driver.
- Point-out. The guide must point out attraction “to the left “or” the right “, and not in front because it is difficult to see. As often as possible, alert guests to attractions coming up on either side to give ample time for the commentary and guest reaction.
- The guide must pace the commentary with the current view. It is okay to talk about attractions the group has seen a while back or those they are yet to see, but it should be in relation to what they currently seeing. The guide can also comment about what the group has just seen, use current events, and not – too – personal experiences related to the view too till dead air.
Tour guides must also guests to digest the information, appreciate the view, and talk about the experience with their seatmates. Guide, as well as their guests, should rest from time to time but they must never nap or sleep when with tourists.
Nonetheless, buses must not run longer than 45 minutes without stopping. Pit stops and photo stops can be planned to break the monotony. It is better to be at the site than staring at it from a window. When there long stretches where there is nothing interesting to see, the guide can provide general information about the country and its culture. Some guides play games, sing along, or tells jokes (Mancini, 2001).
Above all, the tour guide must remember “safety first” when guiding passengers, especially when passengers get on and off the bus. Here are some safety tips:
- Follow traffic rules and regulation.
- Direct your group away from people and vehicular traffic.
- Be mindful of getting in and out of the bus.
- Do not allow passengers to stand up on the aisle while the bus is moving.
- be good to the driver. The driver is the tour guide’s partner, especially in keeping the tourists safe during the tour.
