Management in Dairy Goats
About Lesson

The biggest potential in goat raising is the production of meat and milk. Goats as know to be the poor man’s cow has the most nutritious milk and labelled as next to mothers’ milk. Goat’s milk is highly digestible compared to cows’ milk which is more preferred for infants that has lactose intolerance. Goat are multi-purpose ruminant which is a good source of meat and milk. One of the great opportunities of the goat industry is the steady demand for its meat and which is far beyond the domestic production. Meat production satisfies only 35 percent of the total current meat demand while milk production consists less than 1 percent of the current milk demand thus, venturing into milk production in the Philippines has brighter future.

Goat raising in the Philippines is undertaken commonly by small farmers having only 1-25 heads of goats or they are termed as backyard raisers. In the data published by PSA in 2022, Backyard goat production comprises about 99.2% of the total goat population. Feeding dairy goats with in a feedlot situation, works for some producers including control of parasite problems and the opportunity to use economical commodity feeds and crop by-products especially to those with limited pasture area. Supplementation of concentrates improves both pre-partum and post-partum body condition of goats in extensive system (Sahu, 2013).

Based on 2019 data from PSA, goats milk comprises only 4% of the total milk production of the country. The increasing demand in goats milk will boast the farmers financial capability, provides labor opportunity, improves nourishment within the family members and in general, it will improved the economic status of the community.
