There are several types of accommodation facilities that provide various services depending on the tourists’ needs. The availability of accommodations that match tourists’ preferences is one of the factors that contribute to the decision to visit a destination. Thus, it is important for regulatory agencies like the DOT to maintain certain standards, such as through accreditation. According to the DOT,

Accreditation is a certification issued by an authority to recognize tourism workers and establishments that meet minimum requirements for guest safety and convenience. For purposes of accreditation, DOT classifies lodging facilities into the following categories:
